Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry
Clear answers to help you feel confident about your dental care.
How long does a dental exam and cleaning take?
Most routine exams and cleanings take about 45–60 minutes. Your visit may take a little longer if X-rays are needed or if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while. Our goal is to be thorough while also respecting your time.
How soon after my cleaning can I eat?
In most cases, you can eat right after your appointment. If your teeth or gums are a little sensitive, you may want to avoid very hot, cold, or crunchy foods for a short time. If your dentist gives you specific recommendations, it’s best to follow those instructions.
Why should I get a dental exam if I’m not in pain?
Many dental problems start silently and don’t cause pain until they become serious. Regular exams help us catch issues early—before they turn into painful or expensive problems. Preventive care protects both your smile and your health.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. We use modern digital X-rays that use very low radiation and are considered very safe. X-rays help us detect issues that aren’t visible during a visual exam, including cavities between teeth and problems below the gumline.
What happens during a dental exam?
During your visit, we gently clean your teeth, check your gums, take any necessary X-rays, and examine your mouth for signs of decay or infection. We’ll explain what we see and answer your questions so you always understand your oral health.
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease begins when plaque and bacteria build up along the gumline. Without regular cleanings, this bacteria can lead to inflammation, infection, and eventually bone loss. Early treatment keeps gums healthy and prevents long-term damage.
Can gum disease be treated at home?
Daily brushing and flossing are essential, but gum disease cannot be fully treated at home once it begins. Professional cleanings are needed to remove hardened plaque below the gums and stop infection from progressing.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding gums, bad breath, redness, swelling, tenderness, and gum recession. In early stages, symptoms may be mild—another reason routine checkups are important.
Do cleanings hurt?
Cleanings are normally comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let us know — we’ll make extra adjustments to keep your visit comfortable and stress-free.
What if I haven’t been to the dentist in a long time?
You’re always welcome here. We see patients at all stages of care with zero judgment. Our team focuses on helping you move forward comfortably — one step at a time.
Still have a question? We’re happy to help.
